As the nights get darker and the leaves turn hues of golden brown and red, my excitement builds and I find myself indulging in all things spooky in anticipation of Halloween. It's my favourite time of the year and I like to celebrate it as one might celebrate Christmas. Alongside meticulous costume planning and horror film binges, I enjoy indulging myself with a few scary video games. Lately, I've taken to replaying The Walking Dead games and listening to the Resident Evil and Silent Hill scores on repeat but the list I have compiled is strictly retro and even includes some lesser known titles that never quite received the critical acclaim they deserved at the time.
Here (in release date order) are my top 10 retro games to get you in the mood for Halloween:
1. Ghouls 'n Ghosts (1988) Megadrive/Sega Genesis
Pfft...come at me, Death. I'm wearing shoddily made armour!
2. Splatterhouse (1988) TurboGrafx-16
No one likes their face in this game...it's sad.
3. Sweet Home (1989) NES
Oh, right. Thanks for the heads up creepy doll.
4. Super Castlevania IV (1991) SNES
Swinging on chandeliers since the late 80s
5. Master Of Darkness (1992) MasterSystem
Just casually strolling through here, nothing to see...
6. Zombies Ate My Neighbors/Zombies (1993) SNES
Giant demonic babies, yep, that's a thing....just imagine the smell. Gross.
7. Clock Tower: The First Fear (1997) PlayStation
8. Hellnight (1999) PlayStation
Because that is in no way creepy whatsoever....nope.
9. System Shock 2 (1999) PC
Can I just not explore this corridor...?!
10. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (2002) GameCube
Because nothing sets the tone like a messed up Cthulu-esque carving
So, what are your thoughts on my list? Perhaps you have your own? Be sure to add your suggestions in the comments section.
Until next time, I hope you have a Happy Halloween!
